Chimpanzees freed after 30 Years as Lab Animals

THIS is the moment a group of chimpanzees sees daylight for the first time in 30 years — after being locked in cages for medical testing.

The animals hugged each other in delight before they took their first steps outside.

Emotional footage, above, shows how they reacted to their new surroundings.

The outing marked the end of a 14-year bid to re-integrate the 38 primates after they spent most of their lives cooped up inside.

One commentator said: "They hugged as if saying, 'We're finally free'. And then they laughed."

The chimpanzees were taken from their mothers shortly after their births and brought to a research facility in Austria.

Scientists kept the animals in isolation and gave them HIV and hepatitis. Their ordeal finally ended in 1997 when the pharmaceutical company behind the research was sold.

The chimps were moved to a farm where keepers tried to reintroduce them to life outside — but the process was not easy.

The animals had spent so much time inside they were confused when shown patches of grass — and repeatedly threw them away.

But finally their moment of freedom came. And their keeper Renate Foidl said: "The chimps are incredibly happy. This is amazing, I have been waiting for this moment for so long."

The use of chimps for scientific research has been controversial.

Earlier this year, a hot debate was sparked in New Mexico when animal rights activists demanded the release of 180 working chimps to a sanctuary.

Let's Stop Goose Torture in This Traditional German Game.

The carnival unions in Germany have a 400-year-old carnival tradition called "Gaensereiten." Gaensereiten is a ritual that involves men on horseback trying to tear the head off a goose that hangs from a noose just within reach.

Over the years, this tradition has become slightly more humane in Germany. Currently, the goose is killed before the parade rather than being hanged live and tortured to death by the pulling.

Time Magazine gives a great description on the tradition that is being revived worldwide.

One of our concerned members has started a petition against this cruel act. She is not asking for the tradition to stop, but for mock geese to be used. Even though the geese are killed ahead of time in Germany now, she believes this tradition is still out of line and we are teaching our children it is okay to kill animals for entertainment.

Below is a message from the petition author Elena:

"Please help us in protesting against the German 'Gaensereiten' (goose pulling). It is a medieval tradition in Bochum and we're of the opinion that it's irresponsible to teach children what we're 'allowed' to do with animals or their corpses. The goose is killed before, but it's a rape of the goose's dead body and really needless. We want that there be alternatives used. Thank you!"

To prevent our children from believing it is all right to treat animals this way, sign this petition to get mock geese to be used in place of the real bird.

Charges Upgraded For Patrick's Owner.

It's the seventh day of recovery for Patrick, the emaciated Pit bull who was shoved into a trash bag and thrown down the garbage chute of a 22 story apartment building in Newark, New Jersey.

The dog was rescued just minutes before being hurdled into the building's trash compactor by a maintenance worker who noticed the bag moving.

When the worker ripped open the plastic bag, the young red pit bull terrier inside was a mere skeleton of a dog. He was cold and near death. Someone had starved him and thrown him out with the garbage!!

The dog was rushed by animal control officers to the Associated Humane Societies and Popcorn Park Zoo where his rescuers named him Patrick, because he was found the day before St. Patrick's Day.

Soon after, Patrick was transferred to nearby Garden State Veterinary Specialties where he is currently receiving intensive care.

Patrick, the dog who is recovering after being nearly starved to death and tossed down the garbage chute of a New Jersey apartment has no idea that forces have been working on his behalf to get justice for his horrific abuse.

This week charges against the dog's owner were upgraded to include "torture and torment of a living creature" which carries a much stiffer sentence.

Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray upgraded the animal cruelty charges against Kisha Curtis to a fourth-degree criminal charge that carries a sentence of 18 months in jail and/or a $3,000 fine if she is convicted.

Curtis is currently being held at the Passaic County jail on $10,000 bail.

Col. Frank Rizzo of the New Jersey SPCA left the following statement on the Patrick's page on the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey website.

"Please let this serve as an update on the Patrick the Pitbull case against Kisha Curtis. After careful consideration, we have decided to upgrade the charges against Ms. Curtis from disorderly persons offenses to indictable offense 4:22-17 (b)1 - torment and torture. The public must know that we will not tolerate this kind of behavior towards animals in the State of N J and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."

While all of this legal action took place, Patrick continued with his recovery and reached several big triumphs.

On March 29 Patrick began wagging his tail when he saw staff members at Garden State Veterinary Specialists where he is being cared for. Manager Bruce Sanchez said, "He is truly becoming a real dog again."
On March 30 Patrick gave kisses when his rescuers at the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey came for a visit. The dog also gained 2 ¼ pounds.
On March 31 Patrick was eating enough food for a 50 pound dog, which is what his weight should be.

During the week Patrick has also had a steady stream of visitors from the media and the public to wish him well and bring him lots of treats and toys.

Amazing!!! Goats Rescued From 60-Foot Tall Perch!?

Two young goats were rescued Wednesday after spending nearly two days stranded 60-feet in the air on a narrow 6-inch ledge of an old railroad bridge in Montana. A piece of mining equipment brought them to safety.

The Rimrock Humane Society in Roundup, Montana received a call Wednesday morning from a person who reported seeing two goats stuck on the train bridge. The two female goats had been there for nearly two days.

Sandy Church, president of the Rimrock Humane Society, Cory Freeman from Animal Edventures and a deputy from the Musselshell County sheriff’s department traveled to the area to investigate.

"We have absolutely no idea how or why these little critters would go out on this bridge," Church told the Billings Gazette. "The only thing we can figure is it happened at night and they were unsure of their surroundings. Once morning came, they were too scared to walk back where they came from."

Church worried the goats would fall off their high perch. The animals stayed on the angled thin ledge during their entire ordeal, even though a wider pillar was only a few feet away. Once in a while they tried to lie down, but then quickly realized it made them more vulnerable.

~Gut-wrenching video of a young woman throwing six newborn puppies into a river has generated outrage on the Internet. Here is the latest news as to the identity of the woman and what is being done to locate her.

The disturbing video which was first seen on You Tube, showed a girl in her late teens or early twenties pulling newborn puppies from a bucket and throwing them one-by-one into a rapidly flowing river.

The girl is dressed in a red hoody and from all descriptions appears to have a smirk on her face while performing this ultimate act of cruelty. My account of the abuse is from news stories, as I don't plan on watching the video.~

Update: Justice for the six innocent puppies that were sent to their death in a river by an unidentified young woman may come soon. Police in Bosnia announced Friday they have located the girl. Leads provided by several animal rights groups in Bosnia brought officials to her doorstep. The girl is a teenager who lives in the town of Bugojno. And because she is a minor, police do not plan on releasing her name to the public. The girl's parents will soon be questioned, but according to AFP the girl was told to throw the 3-day-old puppies in the river by her grandmother. AFP reported that local media says the girl believed this was "the most merciful way to get rid of them."

Under a recently adopted animal protection law, people can be fined up to $6,400 for cruel treatment of animals. If the girl is found guilty and fined it would be the first case in Bosnia.

Live Dogs Used As a Shark Bait !

~ A veterinarian successfully treated one of the canines, a six-month-old dog with a large fishhook through its snout (see photo), at an SPA (Société Protectrice des Animaux, or Animal Protective Society) clinic in Réunion's capital, St.-Denis.
Unlike most of the hooked animals, the dog was someone's pet, according to Saliha Hadj-Djilani, a reporter for the Thirty Million Friends Foundation's TV program. The dog had apparently escaped its captors and was taken to the SPA by a concerned citizen. Fully recovered, the animal is now home with its owners.

The other two cases uncovered by Thirty Million Friends were strays. They now live in France with new owners.

The foundation plans to finance a sterilization program on the island to reduce the stray overpopulation. But the job won't be easy. Hutin said many locals view the strays as vermin. "There's no value to the life of a dog there," she said.The Bardot organization has been fighting the practice for a decade. But this is the first time Réunion politicians have reacted strongly and swiftly to stop it, Roche said.

Last month, it became illegal for fishing boats to carry any live or dead dogs or cats in Reunion Capital , St'Denise. ~

Horror as Philippines Horses Are Forced to Fight to the Death!

On Sundays or fiesta days in the Philippines the so called "sport" of Horse Fighting is illiegally conducted. Two stallions are pitted against each other and results in horrific injuries and deaths and often last for hours.

Some stallions are hit so hard in the head their eyes are popped from their sockets. If death doesnt result from the kicks and bites and gruesome injuries, then the horses are inhumanely slaughtered and barbecued and fed to the crowd. Others limp around in the arena with a glazed look in their eyes or break limbs as they try to escape from the bloody arena.

These stallions fight due a mare on heat which is used as bait in the arena for up to six hours - often she is hit by stray blows from the stallions and has to suffer being mated by the winning stallion of each bout - up to 30 times in one tournament. The more blood shed, the louder the crowd during these fights.

Although horse-fighting is illegal in the Philippines, corruption and lack of enforcement ensure that the tournaments continue - and with apparent official sanction.Matches are featured on TV, and local businesses sponsor horses and tournaments. Local authorities offer prize money.The tournaments are promoted as a "cultural tradition", but in fact they are largely organised and controlled by crime syndicates, who rake in huge profits from gambling.

Furry Friends Farm and The Remembering Sheena Campaign held a Press Conference on December 14, 2006 to highlight the plight of Joy, a stray dog that had been so cruelly beaten by Indonesian workers that his lower jaw was crushed.

At about 9am on Dec 2, 2006, Sabrina Yeap, managing partner of the Furry Friends Farm (FFF), rescued a dog at the Ki-Park Sri Utara construction site belonging to developer, Kepong Industrial Park Sdn Bhd (KIP Group). The site is situated about 10km from the Batu Caves roundabout, heading towards Sungei Buloh and Kepong, malaysia.

The lower jaw of the dog was dangling and his tongue was hanging out. Two eye-witnesses who pleaded with Sabrina to help the dog, said they had seen him being beaten by Indonesian foreign workers who kept calling the dog “haram” ( illicit ) as he was attacked.

Sabrina took the dog, which she later named Joy, to the veterinary clinic. Joy’s lower jaw was so badly injured it had to be surgically removed, but the tongue was saved despite having lacerations and blood clots.

As representative of RSC, I spoke to Mr Kok Pick Tong, one of the four managing directors of KIP Group which employs the workers that ill-treated Joy.

I requested permission for Dr Habeeb Rahman Ibramsa, who lectures in Quran and Sunnah Studies at the International Islamic University in Gombak, Selangor, to give a talk to all their foreign workers on Islam’s clear stand of compassion towards animals, including dogs. Mr Kok refused to co-operate.

On December 4, 2006, RSC sent an official letter to Mr Kok making this request along with the request by FFF for the KIP Group to bear all of Joy’s medical expenses and maintenance at the FFF, an animal shelter which has decided to adopt Joy. Mr. Kok has ignored all letters and telephone calls from RSC.

On December 6, 2006, RSC wrote to Dr. Subramaniam, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Tan Seri Datuk Seri Panglima Bernard Dompok, Minister in charge of the Public Complaints Bureau, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The letters were sent out to these parties appealing to the government to be more pro-active in the area of animal welfare in Malaysia.

There has been much public outcry over the banning of a select number of dogs in Shah Alam, the mass “murder” of Mr Eng Her Sun’s dogs by the Seremban Municipal Council’s death squad, the cruel culling of birds by the Department of Veterinary Services during the bird flu scare, the increase in pet dumping and abuse of stray animals and pets.

RSC invited lecturer in Quran and Sunnah Studies at the International Islamic University in Gombak to give a talk to the Indonesian workers but the developer did not allow it.

Hence, RSC and FFF are calling for the Government to support their education programmes that are aimed at ending this needless violence towards animals. Next year is Visit Malaysia Year 2007, and already tourists are squirming at Malaysia’s ill-treatment and cruelty to animals – from wildlife to domestic pets.

“We are not asking the government to find and punish the people who did this to Joy, although the laws of Malaysia provide for this. We are calling on the Government to support our public education projects by persuading the developer, KIP Group, to allow us to educate their workers,” said Sabrina Yeap.

“I wish to end this ignorance that the Quran supports violence against animals, and am willing to give lectures, presentations and screen videos that support what I am saying. I hope the public, Government officials, foreign workers and others who need to hear this truth will attend,” said Dr. Habeeb Rahman Ibramsa, Lecturer in Quran and Sunnah Studies at the International Islamic University, Gombak, Selangor. "

Today Joy has to carry on living without his lower jaw and teeth. He can only eat soft food for the rest of his life. RSC was invited to a meeting called "Dasar Kawalan Anjing" (Guidelines to Control Dogs) in February this year, along with 30 other NGOs by Dr. Subramaniam Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

To-date nothing has been done by the government and we are wondering what the meeting was for. They should instead have held a meeting called "Dasar Kawalan Manusia" (Guidelines to Control Humans)

Is it worth it??

Since the emergence of the internet, reading The Star has somewhat become my daily routine. It is a source of mainstream media without half of the advertisement content in it and worrying to pull over by the streets to buy a copy. As I was reading today's paper, there was an article in it which took my attention. I have to admit that it was a rather radical business idea, and I'm not sure of its acceptance, logically, but seeing Malaysians have somewhat evolved to be more 'kiasu' like their Singaporean counterparts, I think it will be a successful venture after all.

Nirvana Memorial Park, which I think is situated in semenyih , has opened up a 20 000 sq feet pet cemetery which is exclusive for dogs and cats only. The senior marketing manager of the cemetery,oops..I mean park, said that it was designed with a children's theme park in mind since most pet owners' are children. And just like any other thing in Malaysia, nothing comes free - or even cheap. You would need to fork out some RM 6800.00 to have your dead pet collected and then buried, and of course, not forgetting the Malaysian culture, there has to be an early bird special, so it's RM4800.00 now.

It is a very nice idea, at least someone has finally come to appreciate pets. But the irony of it, is the cost. As stated earlier, it was designed keeping kids in mind as they're the main pet owners, but the charges..I don't think any average kid would be able to fork out Rm6800.00 for their pets burial. Or at least I know that I would not be able to afford that. I wonder how much does it cost to buy a pet nowadays. As I remember, a friend of mine bought a pup for about RM 500.00 only a year ago. Has the price of pets inflated just like almost everything else in Malaysia?

"Personally, I don't see a point where I would, even if I could, where I would be spending so much money for my pet to be kept so far away from me, left underground to rot and decay with worms and all other kind of parasites infesting on them. I mean, common..let's be a little bit more logical here as how close are we to our pets. How many Malaysians do actually spend their money on pets. To start of with, we don't even have pet insurance. There isn't a single company out there that I know of who has pet insurance on the table being offered. And I am not going further on this, it could be my next business idea."

Being so backward in all these, I do not see the logic of jumping all the steps in between and coming up with a burial ground for pets. It is a common thing in certain developed nations to have them, but these countries would literally hang you upside down before ripping you apart if you were to abuse an animal. Although this is a very radical to be, profitable business idea, I personally feel that we are too far behind before we can come up with a cemetery of this sort.

It is more important to instill appreciation to the animals and maintaining healthy lifestyle with your pet before thinking of where to bury them and be cool about having spent so much money burying them. Come on, spend you money on you pets while they are still alive rather then when their dead, just like what you should be doing to your parents, and of course make sure the dates on the tombstone is correct to the least.

So, would I ever use this facility to let my 3 cats rest in peace in future? - I don't think so. Not only because I can't afford it, but even if I could, I would prefer to have them cremated, and to keep their ashes in an urn, close to me...

A dog was knocked down by a car and died on the middle of the road. Later another dog seen beside the corpse of the dog, he tried to wake his friend up by using his leg.

When his attempts to wake his friend failed, he tried to push his friend to the side of the road.
But the weight of his friend was proven too heavy to him.

Though the traffic is busy and dangerous , he juz will not go away from his friend. Just stand beside his friend howling and crying.

A lot of people saw this incident and feel very touched. How even a dog can show his loyalty and love to his friend...

They're Dying To Entertain You...

Patronize circuses that are animal-free, Circus animals do not perform to please their trainer. They work from fear only after having their spirits broken.

Most circus animals have been brutalized and perform because their food, water, rest (or all three) have been withheld. Some performing animals are only fed after a satisfactory performance.

In order to force animals to perform stressful acts (like jumping through fire), trainers use whips, muzzles, electric prods, and bullhooks. In nature, these animals would be free to walk and run, choose lifetime companions, and raise their families. The circus forces the animals to perform confusing acts night after night for 48 to 50 weeks every year. Between acts, elephants are kept chained, and bears and tigers are "stored" in cages barely large enough for them to turn around in.

Elephants are routinely shackled, deprived of water and beaten with bullhooks, after which they will allow someone to sit on their heads, or submit to waltzing on their hind legs.

When tigers aren't confined in small cages, they're chained to their pedestals. Ropes are put around their necks to choke them into learning tricks. Tigers leap though hoops of fire to avoid being punished should they fail to please their trainers.

Elephants, big cats and other "exotics" belong in their homelands, not under the bright lights of a circus ring for commercial entertainment. Monkeys never get to climb trees or stay in a troop and bears never have the comfort of a den, wild animals deprived of their natural environment and living in cages in the circus.

Still nursing baby animals are taken away from their mothers before they are weaned causing trauma, harm, loneliness and even death. Training animals start at a very young age.

Dressing animals in costumes and forcing them to perform tricks robs them of their dignity and the respect they deserve. Wild animals don't do headstands or jump through fire because they enjoy it; they do it out of fear of punishment.

We have to stop teaching our kids that they should applaud this kind of animal slavery, abusive confinement and training, and hideous exploitation. People think that circuses are fun. But they don’t think about what these poor animals have to endure for their entertainment.

Remembering Tyke...

Tyke, was the circus elephant who courageously rebelled on television worldwide back in August of 1994. She first killed her trainer, trampled a groomer and then ran rampant in the streets of Honolulu before she was finally gunned down by 87 bullets. She lay bleeding, agonizing and crying in the street for two more hours, until she finally died.

As some may already know and some may not, Tyke Catalyzed the founding of the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, as well as several other animal advocate institutions. She inspired California Congressman Sam Farr to write up legislation to protect elephants from circuses. She has inspired many localities to ban circuses with elephant acts. She has also touched many individuals as well - one man wears a tattoo of Tyke as a conversation piece to educate others; some have made Tyke T-shirts, and so on.

If someone were to ask Riddle (or his people) about Tyke, he will say that Tyke deserved what she got. Some say she knew what she was in for; it was kind of like Thelma and Louise – She was going to go all the way! No turning back! She was so brave!

Cute, small breeds are always put in pet shop windows to attract children and impulsive buyers. Pet shop owners are interested in making money, after all, they are running a business. They are not primarily concerned with educating their buyers in properly caring for their new pets or in taking responsibility for their well-being.

And so, new owners go home and soon realise that owning a pet is not all fun or as easy as they thought. Many abandon their pets when the novelty wears off, and these gorgeous little puppies and kittens are now homeless in a pound awaiting a death sentence. Of course not all pound dogs and cats were originally bought from pet shops and discarded, but based on discussions with pounds and rescue centres, observing the breeds that predominate in shelters and statistical logic, it is obvious that many were.

Because this pet shop market exists in all over the world, backyard breeders and "puppy farms" continue to churn out more and more poor puppies and kittens, while thousands are being killed at the pounds every year.

" Why encourage people to breed animals for profit while so many loving animals are killed for no crime other than not being able to find a home? "

Grimes Jailed for Rescuing Dying Chained Dog.

40 or so people went on to the district court, filled the courtroom, with 30 or so people overflowing to the parking lot, where they waited for 4 hours to see the results and be there when we came out. Talk about dedication! People came from as far away as Ohio, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and the far reaches of Pennsylvania to support Tammy and what she did for Doogie.

Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested Monday, September 11, 2006, for helping a dying chained dog she dubbed Doogie in East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Grimes organization was called with frantic pleas for help by a neighbor and another concerned citizen who alerted them to his plight.

Kim Eicher, the neighbor, stated that Doogie had been unable to stand since Saturday, and she had gotten no response from the local humane society after calling all weekend. Grimes instructed her to call again, leaving a detailed message. When Ms. Eicher had gotten no response by noon, Grimes team went out to see if they could help Doogie.

Grimes, upon seeing Doogie from the road, initially felt he had already died, as he was lying with his back to the road and was not moving. Her team went to investigate, and found that he was still alive, but was unable to stand, his legs flailing about in the mud and his own feces. She documented his condition with video and photos, and—making the decision to put Doogie's welfare ahead of any fears of legal action—took him to a local veterinarian, getting him immediate and necessary care. She then took Doogie to her home, bathed him, gave him food and water, and made him comfortable. OK, everyone, if you're getting this e-mail it means the police followed through on their threat to put me in jail for taking Doogie today.

Here is the background info:

We got a call from Kim in East Freedom this morning, crying because Doogie hadn't gotten up since Saturday. She had been calling the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society since Saturday to no avail. We told her we aren't law officers, and she needed to call the humane officer. Then we got another call about the same dog, from another person who passes him every day. At that point we called Kim back to see if she'd heard from the Humane Officer.

She had not, so we promised her we'd go out and see what we could do. When we got there, we took photos and video of Doogie. We initially thought he was dead, as he was not moving and his back was to us. We found out that the people were not home to talk to about him, so I made the decision that he could not lay there on the cold wet ground for one moment longer, and I would accept all consequences of my decision.The neighbor Kim has agreed to testify on my behalf if necessary.

She cried the whole time we were there, you can hear her on the video.

I think once you see the video and pictures, you'll understand why I made this decision.The vet documented his general negligent condition, low weight, sores, missing fur, and took xrays of his back and hips. He determined that he has very bad back spurs that are causing him a lot of pain and are most likely responsible for his inability to walk.He also saw an undetermined mass near his hip on the xray. He gave him a shot for pain plus some B vitamins for energy, so that perhaps he could have even one good day or a few good hours. He wrote a letter stating his condition in case we needed it.

Shortly after we got Doogie to my home, situated, bathed (had to, the stench was too bad), and fed and watered an Officer Flag called from the Freedom Township Police Department (I know, Freedom, isn't that ironic?). He wanted me to return Doogie, which I refused to do.Here's what I need from you all. View the videos and photos, below. I think you'll agree with me that this is NOT acceptable in ANY kind of humane society, and we cannot allow this kind of animal abuse. We MUST stand up and STOP accepting this to be ok for people to do to their dogs, and STOP jailing those who are trying to help them!

Malaysia's Inhumane Dog-Catching Competition by MPS council.

Catch more than 150 stray dogs within six months and you might just win at least RM11,000.

This competition was announced by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) recently to solve the stray dog problem in the area.

It is open to residents.

However, the dog-catching competition drew a lot of flak from animal lovers and pet owners who described the move as inhumane and distasteful.

Council president Zainal Abidin Azim said the competition was introduced as it received about 80 complaints about stray dogs every month.

He said that despite catching about 200 stray dogs every month as part of their animal control management, the problem remained unsolved.

The chairman of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Selangor (SPCA), Christine Chin, said that the MPS was setting an unhealthy and unethical trend that encouraged people to perceive dog-catching as fun and financially rewarding.

Chin questioned the methods that residents might resort to, which could cause unnecessary pain and suffering if the dogs were maimed in the process.

Spokesman for non-governmental group Furry Friends Sabrina Yeap said that MPS should use the reward money to engage professional dog-catchers instead of relying on residents who were not trained to nab stray dogs.

Under the rules of the competition, residents can work with their respective resident committees or any other organisation, but must deliver the dogs alive.

Photographs of the captured dogs are to be submitted as proof and the council will provide tools for those interested in taking part in the competition.

The first-prize winner will walk home with RM15,000; the runner-up RM13,000 while the third -placed winner will win RM11,000.

The minimum capture for the top three winners must be at least 150 dogs each.
Each month, the council pays RM20 for each stray dog caught as an incentive to the dog-catchers.

The dog, a pit bull called Maximus by his rescuers, died last week after three surgeries. Authorities said he smelled of gasoline when he was found, severely injured, on July 12.

"He was a good dog up until the very end ... giving licks and kisses," Reed Zaroff, one of the Long Island veterinarians who tried to save him, told Newsday.

Derick Phanord, 22, of Brentwood, was arrested Monday night on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, Suffolk County police said. Phanord also was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for possessing a bludgeon, police said.

He was awaiting arraignment on Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip. Donations are still being collected to defray the costs of Maximus' treatment.

Steer Roping

The Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo includes an event called single steer roping (also known as steer busting or steer tripping). Steer busting is so brutal ( picture above ) and cripples and kills so many animals that it is allowed in only a handful of western states.

A steer is impossibly contorted during an event that used to be called "steer tripping" or "steer busting." It is the most cruel and dangerous event in rodeo. The name of the event has now been changed to the more benign-sounding "steer roping." The name may be changed, but the abuse remains the same. See more steer busting at CFD.

Calf Roping - Abusing baby animals!

This event used to be called calf roping, because that's what it is. Three to four month-old calves are clotheslined, body slammed and tied for points. The calves are considered expendable. In an effort to mask the true nature of this disgusting activity, rodeo people have now changed the name of the event to "tie-down roping." The name has changed, but the cruelty of the abusers is the same.

Because irresponsible retailers sell birds and other animals to people who buy them on impulse—including some people who don’t have a clue about how to properly care for them—countless birds spend their entire lives unable even to use or stretch their wings, confined to small cages, and deprived of the vital companionship of other birds.

Driven mad from boredom and loneliness, caged birds often become aggressive, neurotic, and self-destructive. They pull out their own feathers, incessantly bob their heads, peck over and over again at cage bars, and shake or even collapse from anxiety.

Just as there are puppy mills, there are now enormous bird factories, where breeders warehouse thousands of parrots and other exotic birds and remove their offspring in order to sell them. Cruel Killing of 13 Dogs, Shot to Death by the Malaysian (Seremban) Municipal Council!

~Eng visiting the 11 dogs that he had transferred to a temporary shelter in Membau, several kilometres from his house in Seremban. Eng had kept 26 dogs until the incident, when half of them were shot dead by a team from the municipal council~

66-year-old Eng Her Sun is a hero for giving stray dogs a home, but to some of his neighbours he is a nuisance. On July 2006, the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) shot 13 of the 26 dogs living with him at his terrace house in Taman Desa Rasah. While the council’s action has caused an uproar among animal lovers who described it as cruel, some of the odd-job worker’s neighbours defended it.

It is claimed that the Eng's, guardian of 26 dogs were hoarding animals, a human behaviour that involves the keeping of higher than typical numbers of companion animals (pets) which is against the law, and without necessarily having the ability to properly house or care for them.

Yes, animal hoarding can lead to serious dangers to health, both for the companion animal and their guardians because of the sanitation issues that keeping animals entails.

Whatever the accusation is/was, true or false, these guardians of 26 dogs did what they did nothing but out of love and compassion. The authorities should have realized that there are humane ways in dealing with issues such as these.

Unfortunately, instead working together to help each other out, and finding humane solutions, the Malaysian Municipal Council Enforcement Officers took a rather shocking and inhumane approach to deal with the matter...

All that matters to the killers, is that this method of slaughter causes least damage to the dogs fur - preserving its market value.German Shepherd dogs are the most commonly killed dogs in China, as their fur resembles the fur of wild animals such as coyote or raccoon - the same courageous and noble breed that guides the blind and does search and rescue, these intelligent and loyal dogs are being bred in huge numbers in the north of China.

Dogs and Cats Skinned Alive for Their Fur in China

Cats fare no better than dogs in China, the cats are killed by being hung by the neck from a piece of rope that tightens as the cats struggle causing them to eventually suffocate. Sometimes the cats are hung from a wire while water is poured down their throats through a hose until they drown. Long haired cats are kept as pets in China, yet ironically an estimated 500,000 short haired cats, mainly ginger or tabby coloured are raised for their pelts, estimated figures are that about a half million cats are killed each season from October to February. Cat fur is hard to distinguish from other furs once it has been dyed - President of a German company prominent in the cat fur trade.

Innocent cats, many of them stolen pets, are slowly and cruelly strangled while other cats watch, all await the same fate.

WHAT MORE CAN YOU DO?

-Inform owners and managers of shops and department stores about the trade in dog and cat fur and ask them to not sell fur products.
-Boycott shops that sell fur, and politely but firmly explain your reasons to management. Tell them you won’t shop at their premises again until they stop selling fur and that you will encourage your friends and family and everyone in your community to do the same
-The Chinese pet products industry is hugely profitable (and it brings much more money to the booming Chinese economy than cat and dog fur sales.) This makes China vulnerable to a boycott that will hit them where it really counts: Tell the pet shop owners and management in your local area that you are boycotting products made in China as a protest against the Chinese dog and cat fur trade, and urge them to join the boycott by refusing to sell toys, leads, bowls or any other products that are manufactured in China.
-Write letters to local papers, contact local radio stations and tv news stations to raise awareness of the issue.
-Circulate our website address, http://www.voice4dogs.org/ to friends, family, neighbours and those in your address books, spread the word.

Torturing a Bull for Saint John

We are constantly hearing from people about how tortured their souls and spirits are, because of the Church's action, or lack of it, when it comes to animal issues, and many of these people have left their church because of it and turned against Christianity. Toros de Coria is one of the most blasphemous and sadistic forms of "entertainment" that we have ever seen, and the Church's silence and acquiescence about this event is the primary reason it continues.

Rosa writes: Every year between the 26th and 29th of June in Coria, Extremadura, arguably the most backwards region of Spain when it comes to animal issues, a hapless bull is horribly tortured to death by the rabble. He is made to walk for hours while being tortured with darts, directed especially to his eyes and other delicate parts, until he gets so tired from the stress, the pain and the blood loss that he lays down to rest and that is when the barbarians fall on him and cut his testicles while he is still alive.

Rosa continues: No-one that has a minimum of sensitivity or conscience can understand what moves humans to do things like this but they do, and it happens all over Spain and also in parts of Mexico, Brazil...while the authorities at best ignore it, at worst declare it of "cultural interest" and promote it! Most of these events are dedicated to saints from the Catholic church (Saint John for the Toros de Coria).

We can understand why these hard hearted government officials and politicians support such cruelty: they are trying to buy votes, just as our politicians do when they kill innocent animals in hope of buying the votes of the 4% of Americans who hunt. However, we can not understand how the church, particularly the Catholic Church, can sit "idoly" by and support such ungodly and satanic torture, whether through their silence or actual support.

LaSSie Langkawi Animal Shelter & Sanctuary Foundation

The Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary Foundation is set up to receive, rehabilitate and care for neglected, abused and needy animals. The organization also runs the Langkawi Island Animal Clinic a charity project aimed at the sterilization of the stray cat population. Both are non-profit ventures, staffed by volunteers and aimed at improving the lives of unwanted animals.

LASSie is a private organisation intiated by Narelle McMurtrie who set up Bon Ton Restaurant & Resort Langkawi in 1984. Narelle has a big heart for the animals and in the beginning accommodated a number of dogs which she saved from disastrous living conditions and gave them a home.
The Sanctuary cares for animals whose age, disposition or disability make them unlikely to find homes. Many of our animals are road accident or trauma cases and therefore need special love and attention. These animals are given the opportunity to live out their lives with dignity.
For stray cats on the streets, they are trapped and sterilized, then returned to their normal habitat. In this way the Sanctuary hopes to control the stray population. An adoption centre is also in operation.
Animals put up for adoption are spayed, neutered, dewormed and vaccinated. Astray wildlife brought to the shelter are treated and once healthy are then returned back to nature.

The bitch Buffy was run over by a car and suffered a heavy injury of her spinal column which ties her up since then to the wheel chair. Eyewitnesses reported that the car have had enough space to avoid contact with the dog, because barely traffic was at this time; nevertheless, the driver went straight ahead and run over the dog without breaking just a single time.

Buffy was brought seriously injured, deaths near, into the clinic and we began immediately with the necessary rescue measures.

She suffered in her accident several fractured ribs, as well as chest bruises and lung bruises; she had big problems to breathe and the shock did his part to make worse her state. Buffys heart function had got off its balance and we had to revive her three times by heart massage and giving artificial respiration.

Buffy had, in addition, a severe spinal bruise, the resultant swell clamped the nerves which are responsible for the control of the abdomen.

After approx six hours intensive treatment, Buffys state improved so far that we could grant some rest to her. We laid her, wrapped in a warm blanket, on a mattress in the examination room and watched the night long over buffys.

During the following days she got better visibly and she started to eat by herself.Unfortunately, her back nerves were damaged by the persistent swell irreparable - she will not able to run no more.

Buffy was treated during five months in the clinic and she learned to handle with her impediment. Because she had neither bowel, nor bladder under control, she got baby diapers to which she got used rather fast. Now Buffy chuteed cheerfully, on her diaper bottom in the clinic around and greeted every new visitor, or patients effusively what the one, or other patient not always found completely so great.

We procured a wheel chair for Buffy, from England. Now Buffy became properly agil; she raced in the clinic area around and got used very fast to the new kind of the locomotion.

Buffy lives, in the meantime, belovedly and protected in the house of Narelle, in the Bon Ton Resort. She has there still other dogs around and may be so properly a dog.

Huntingdon Life Sciences ( HLS ) is one of the world's largest animal testing labs, operating two facilities in England and one the U.S. Everyday inside its walls , thousands of animals suffer and in painful and unnescessary tests. Exposed in five undercover investigations since 1989, HLS has given public a rare glimpse inside the vivisection industry. The horrors witnessed inside HLS have given rise to one of the most successful anti-vivisection campaigns in the history of the animals rights movement.

Some of the more gruesome details revealed:

• 32 beagle dogs were locked in metal cages for 52 weeks. They were given Sucralose mixed in with their normal feed, and blood and urine samples were collected. At the end of the study they were killed by means of exsanguiation - they had their throats slit open and bled to death. They were then cut open and their organs - by now drained of blood so easier to dissect - were examined to test the product's toxicity levels.

• Four beagle puppies (or as HLS calls them – punching bags) were starved before being force-fed the super-sweet sugar powder. HLS employees then took blood samples from the jugulars of the infant dogs.

• An unspecified number of marmoset monkeys either died from the poisoning or were killed at the termination of the research at HLS.

• The report states that 12 of these monkeys, which were babies – under 10 months old – were force-fed Sucralose for seven weeks. Two of the primates died on the seventh day from brain defects, another primate was mysteriously killed after four weeks, and the remainder all were murdered at the completion of the seventh week. Some of the recorded observations from this study noted “in appetence, body weight loss, unwillingness to use hind leg, hopping, involuntary grip reflexes, salivation and subdued mood.”

• Huntingdon also used rabbits to study the effects of the product. These little animals were given 1200 times the expected daily intake and not surprisingly most died from the trauma. Many of the other rabbits suffered from convulsions, weight loss, and various intestinal disorders.

• Huntingdon also tested the product on pregnant rabbits, mice, and rats – killing both the mothers and the fetuses.

(Ships' cats thus goes back a very long time indeed; they have been valued not only for their pest-control attributes and for their remarkable ability to adapt to new surroundings, but for the companionship and sense of home and security they gave to sailors away from home for long periods, particularly in times of war. No doubt there are still plenty of ships' cats elsewhere: but, sadly, since 1975 they (and all other animals) have been banned from Royal Navy vessels on hygiene grounds. I would have thought having a cat on board was a great deal more hygienic than having rats, but it's been decreed otherwise.)

Do you know what declawing a cat does?

Many people report that they are happier with their cats after declawing, because it makes the cats “better pets.” Unfortunately, just as many people have discovered – too late – that declawing frequently leads to far worse problems than it solves. There is no way to know ahead of time into which category your cat might fall! There are other, better ways to solve behavior problems than radical and irreversible surgery.

what is declawing??

Declawing, which is rightly described as “de-toeing” when the same procedure is done to chickens, is the amputation of each front toe at the first joint (hind foot declaws are not commonly done but would be equivalent). This is necessary because, unlike a fingernail, the claw actually grows from the first toe bone. The procedure is so excruciatingly painful that it was once used as a technique of torture, and even today is the primary test of the effectiveness of pain medications. Recovery takes a few weeks, but even after the surgical wounds have healed, there are other long-term physical and psychological effects.

( ~ There are a few individuals who will always declaw their cats. Their own convenience and the safety of their belongings is their top priority, and whether or not it causes suffering to the cat is not a significant concern. Fortunately, most people truly love their feline companions and want to do what’s best for all concerned. If you are one of these wonderful people, please think carefully about this beautiful little animal who trusts you and relies on you for her very existence. ~) Please make the humane choice – DO NOT DECLAW!

( Petition to the Prime Minister )

Dear Animal Lovers and Advocates,As you may be aware, the SPCA started a petition to the prime minster to raise the cruelty fine from RM200 to a significantly higher fine of around RM10,000.00. The petition, which included the signatures of supporters, was supposed to be handed to the prime minister in October 2004. However, this has not happened, as they only managed to raise 20,000 signatures. Due to the insufficient number of signatures collected during the first phase of this petition, the SPCA is entering a second phase in hope to collect at least 100,000 signatures locally and internationally. Now they entering phase II stage of the petition.

Animal lovers all over Malaysia petition for a pro-active government stance on the prevention of cruelty to animals by passing effective and deterrant legislation:
1.
Increasing the cruelty fine from RM200 (since 1953) significantly higher to around RM 10,000.00 and increase jail time.
2.
A life time ban on animal ownership for those charged with cruelty to animals --- animals therefore cannot be returned to the owners.
3.
To urge the public to be responsible pet owners - spay/neuter their pets, adequate food, space, exercise, love and mediacal attention and to be considerate neighbours.

Remembering Sheena ..

Who was she?

Born seven years ago, Sheena was a beautiful German Shepherd who died in August this year. The hope and happiness of a puppy were dashed when Sheena ended up in the hands of a cruel owner.The photos above are of Sheena in the last days of her life. These photos splashed across the national newspapers with her ribs sticking out and stomache bloated sitting by her rusty bowl of contaminated water broke hearts all across the country. Her owner, an engineer from Subang Jaya had kept her tied up and starving.

Based on the post-mortem report, Sheena was infected with ticks. She also suffered brittle bones due to malnutrition from young and the malfunction of all her major organs causing water retention which resulted in a bloated abdomen, empty bladder and stomach.According to newspaper reports, a neighbour had trice telephoned the Selangor Veterinary Department, but nobody went to save the dog. Finally, she called the SPCA and they rushed to the scene to find her still tied and sleeping in her own faeces.The rescue came too late. Sheena had to be put down on August 18, 2005. The post-mortem revealed that she had suffered neglect for years.Ironically, it is likely that Sheena, the very same dog starved by her owner, would still lick his hand today if she were alive.

Reports that came in just days after Sheena’s story broke.

Soon after Sheena’s ordeal was highlighted in the Press, the Star carried on its front page, the story of a Malayan Tiger that was butchered into four pieces. The perpetrator was apprehended and brought before the court, but set free after he paid a RM7,000 fine. The parts could easily fetch much more on the market than the fine he had paid.And only days later, another story appeared in the Star of a breeder who kept his cats in such deplorable conditions that even the published photographs of one cat did not look like a cat at all.

Why we should remember her?

Sheena stands for all the abused and neglected pets in Malaysia / world. The 21st century has seen an increase in reported abuse of domestic animals. Many of these pets are returned to their owners after the case is investigated, and prosecution takes place. The Animal Ordinance 1953 has a maximum of RM200 fine and/or 6 months imprisonment as penalty for abusing an animal. In Sheena’s case, her owner admitted guilt, and was fined RM100, not even a quarter of the price of a German Shepherd puppy, and definitely not even close to the price of her precious life. Sheena must be remembered, so that other animals won’t suffer.
